However, when I tried to replace the Hourglass silhouette Shaper, which I had previously purchased in a size 36, I ordered the corresponding L and it was so much smalller I could not possibly get it on. What size sould I order?

Waist trainers and the word comfort do not usually go hand in hand. However i will say that this mini is just that! I am short waisted and many others would be too long causing discomfort, numbness and then the wires would always dig in. This mini is perfect!

It still shows through clothing. I have to try to conceal it with a shirt or tank top.
I've never had a zipper trainer so that was interesting. I absolutely love the shorter torso, but I notice now I have major back fat AND a stomach pouch.
